Dr. Frank Napier, Jr. School of Technology (Napier Academy) Goes to Harvard with UDL

Napier Academy's, Ms. Julie A. Joseph (UDL PLC Supervisor and Language Arts Teacher), accepted an invitation to present at CAST’s 4th Annual Universal Design for Learning Symposium located on the Harvard Law School Campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts this summer. UDL is a set of principles for curriculum development that can help to reduce the barriers to learning by focusing on how to make the classroom environment more conducive to learning and flexible. This framework provides a structure that gives all students a voice, builds off of their existing strengths, and identifies how they learn best using their individual learning styles. UDL is based on research in the fields of education, psychology, and neuroscience about how the brain works.

During her presentation, Ms. Joseph shared how the Dr. Frank Napier, Jr. School of Technology uses the Universal Design for Learning framework to engage students and enhance learning for students from diverse and challenging backgrounds. She also shared how educators should continue to find new and creative ways to educate students. Additionally, she expressed the need for educators to use best practices such as UDL during instruction to meet the needs of all learners. Ms. Setal Ghodiwala (Special Education Teacher) assisted Ms. Joseph during her presentation. She shared examples of student work.

Furthermore, Ms. Joseph met with educators and administrators from different states and from around the world. She found that no matter what community you teach in, educators face many of the same challenges and are researching innovative ways such as UDL to teach students today.
